Mahogany chatted with Liz Chatman, creator of Urban Chic Living, to find out what motivates her, who empowers her, and how she celebrates her Blackness.
What was your inspiration for starting Urban Chic Living?
I created this brand because I wanted to be a part of celebrating Black women and the beauty we bring—celebrated in various sizes, shapes, ages, and hues.
What do you hope Black women will feel when they use Urban Chic Living?
I hope they will feel seen, encouraged, and strong in their faith.
How does it feel to receive support and encouragement from our community?
I am so grateful to be amongst all the beautiful Black-owned businesses and to know that people appreciate what I bring to the table.
Who in your life encourages and empowers you the most?
My hubby, daughter, and best friend support me the most! They believe in my gifts sometimes more than I do.
What advice would you give to a sister who wants to start her own business?
I tell other sisters to just go for it! I believe that God has given us all gifts and talents, and that there is room at the table for us all to succeed.
Here at Mahogany, we’re motivated by purpose, faith, and community, to celebrate Blackness 24/7. How do you celebrate yours?
I am motivated by my faith in God, and I feel that my purpose is to encourage others—especially within the Black community. And that we are to reach out and help each other so we can grow together!
Anything else you want readers to know about you and your business?
I am not a crafty person at all, but I absolutely love designing products. I am always trying to better my skills and learn new programs.
