Mahogany chatted with Deydra and Shakira, creators of Trivia For Us, to find out what motivates them, who empowers them, and how they celebrate their Blackness.

What was your inspiration for starting Trivia For Us?
The need for more diversity and representation in the trivia and gaming industry inspired us to create Trivia For Us. Our desire to build a community centered around an activity that encourages engagement and mental stimulation and brings joy led us to develop our card games, so family and friends could play along from the comfort of their homes.
What do you hope Black people will experience when they play Trivia For Us?
We want Black people to feel seen and to know this game was intentionally created for them by two Black women. The Trivia For Us card game is a love letter to Black culture and memorializes our history in a fun and innovative way.
How does it feel to receive support and encouragement from our community?
Receiving support and encouragement from the Black community is a confirmation that Trivia For Us is indeed “A Mind Game for the Culture.” It means we are doing something right, and we are grateful to be championed by our very own.
Who in your life encourages and empowers you the most?
We are both so blessed to have families that encourage and empower us to keep moving forward and allow us to dream BIG! We both grew up playing board games and cards with our families; they are responsible for the foundation we are building upon.
What advice would you give to a sister who wants to start her own business?
The advice we give people looking to start a business is to start! It’s a misconception that you have to have all of your ducks in a row; just begin and be patient with the process. Starting a business is a journey, not a race. Once you get started, register your business in your respective state to get an EIN, so you can pay taxes on your business. And consult with an Intellectual Property attorney to learn how to trademark or protect your idea.
Here at Mahogany, we’re motivated by purpose, faith, and community, to celebrate Blackness 24/7. How do you celebrate yours?
As two HBCU alumnae, we celebrate our Blackness 24/7 by being our most authentic selves and unapologetically using our voices to be changemakers. Through the creation of the Trivia For Us card game that preserves Black history and promotes Black joy, we’ve created a platform for others to celebrate their Blackness.
Anything else you want readers to know about you and your business?
Yes, Trivia For Us prides itself on being inclusive. Our trivia game features questions that appeal to a multicultural and multigenerational audience. Old school meets new school in this unique game of trivia that pays homage to the entire Black diaspora, highlighting Black culture and history from around the world. We also host in-person and virtual, corporate, conference, and private events to engage people in a unique and gamified way. Please reach out to us via email: triviaforus@gmail.com.
