I am a survivor. My journey through life has been marked by abuse, neglect, and poverty. These experiences have shaped who I am today — not as a victim, but as a beacon of strength and resilience. My story is a testament to the fact that it is not where you start, but where you finish that determines your destiny.
My childhood was anything but ideal. Growing up, I often felt isolated and hopeless. The pain of my childhood trauma left deep scars that seemed invincible. By the age of thirteen, I found myself pregnant and thrust into the daunting role of mother, long before I was ready. The weight of the world rested heavily on my young shoulders, and it seemed like the odds were stacked against me.
Dropping out of high school, I became a statistic — a young mother with no formal education and four children by the age of twenty. I thought my story was over, that my future was sealed with the limitations of my past. Little did I know, this was just the beginning of a transformative journey that would redefine my life and sense of self.
Determined to change the narrative, I made the courageous decision to go back to school and obtain my G.E.D. It was a daunting task — juggling the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of education — but I was resolute. Each step forward was a testament of my inner strength and resilience. Earning my G.E.D. was a monumental achievement, a small but significant victory that fueled my determination to strive for more.
With my G.E.D. in hand, I set my sights on higher education. I enrolled in college and pursued a bachelor’s degree in social work. The journey wasn’t easy, but every challenge was a reminder of my resilience and my commitment to building a better future for myself and my children. My studies opened my eyes to the broader issues of social justice and the necessity of advocating for those who, like me, had faced tremendous adversity.
Graduating with my bachelor’s degree was a pivotal moment in my life. It was not just a piece of paper, but a symbol of my strength, perseverance, and the unyielding belief that I could change the trajectory of my life. Empowered by my education, I began writing and sharing my story in the hope that it would inspire others to overcome their own challenges. I authored several books, each one a testament to my journey from darkness to light.
My passion for advocacy led me to share my story with a non-profit aimed at training adults how to prevent abuse. This work was deeply personal and profoundly fulfilling. By sharing my story and working to protect other children, I found a sense of purpose and healing. It reinforced the lesson that our experience, no matter how painful, can be transformed into a source of strength and harnessed as a catalyst for positive change.
Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in social work, with the goal of becoming a trauma-informed therapist. This path allows me to use my experiences to help others heal and find their own strength, as I have learned that our beginnings do not define us; it is our response to those beginnings that shapes our destiny.
Resilience is not about never failing; it is about getting up any time you do fail. Strength is not measured by the absence of hardship, but by the ability to face it head-on and emerge stronger. My journey has taught me that every set-back is an opportunity for a comeback; every challenge is a chance to grow.
I am living proof that with determination, courage, and unyielding belief in oneself, anything is possible. My past does not dictate my future; I do! And the same is for you. Let my story be a reminder that it is never too late to rewrite your story — to rise from the ashes and to build a future filled with hope, purpose, and strength.
