For so long, I believed joy had to be earned. I thought celebration only came after the promotion, the relationship, or the milestone. I wore “Strong Black Woman” like a badge of honor — pushing, proving, and pouring into everyone else while quietly running on empty.
Then life shifted. It got more demanding. The pressures of keeping up, industry changes, the instability of the economy, burnout, and evolving friendships left me stretched thin. Some days I barely recognized myself under the weight of it all. The anxiety was so heavy, it felt like it had stolen my breath. I looked up after months of pushing through and realized I had forgotten the small luxuries that once made me smile — walking on the beach, buying myself fresh flowers, or sinking into a candlelit bath. Somewhere in the shuffle of holding it all together, I had stopped holding myself.
That was my wake-up call. That was when I defined what I now call my “Champagne Era.”
And, no, my “Champagne Era” is not about champagne . . . though I do love my bubbly. For me, my “Champagne Era” is a decision. It’s me choosing to treat my life, even in the midst of trials, with the same celebratory outlook as a champagne toast. It’s about celebrating growth as it’s happening, not just when the world says I’ve made it. It’s about reclaiming joy, setting intention, and embracing beauty as a way of honoring the woman I am becoming.
Here’s what I’ve learned since stepping into this new season:
- The little things bring me back to myself. Biking on the beach, flowers on the counter, or listening to R&B ’90s and 2000s on vinyl and loudly singing off-key. These little things remind me I am worth slowing down for.
- Protecting my peace is holy. Every time I say “No” to chaos, I say “Yes” to my own well-being. That kind of “Yes” is a form of self-love.
- Joy builds resilience. The more I celebrate small wins, the steadier I feel when storms come.
As Black women, we’re often taught to keep carrying, to keep giving, to keep surviving. But my “Champagne Era” has taught me that abundance is not selfish — it’s sustainable. Beauty is not a bonus — it’s a birthright. Joy is not a luxury — it’s a lifeline.
This holiday season, I’m choosing to embody my new outlook. Every Thursday night, I pour a little bubbly — white wine, rosé, or sometimes just sparkling water — and I pause. I thank God for one blessing, name one boundary I kept, and celebrate one win from the week. It’s simple, but it reminds me that His grace is enough and that I am allowed to stop, breathe, and honor where I am.
Sis, if you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to step into your own “Champagne Era,” let this be your sign. Don’t wait for everything to align. Begin with one small act of joy that belongs to you. Light the candle. Buy the flowers. Take the walk. Reclaim the things that make you feel alive.
Because the “Champagne Era” isn’t just a season — it’s a decision. And once you choose it, you’ll never look at your life the same way again.
So, here’s my toast — to me, to you, and to every woman who is daring to celebrate her life in real time. Sis, what are you doing to celebrate the season of life you’re in?
